There was a time in my life when I felt completely stuck.

At 49, I was pursuing a Master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology while working full-time. I was close to the finish line—just three classes away.

But one course—advanced statistics—stopped me in my tracks.

Late nights. Frustration. Doubt.

I started questioning everything:

  • Am I in the right program?

  • Should I quit and start over?

  • Is this even worth it?

I was doing everything I thought I should—working harder, pushing longer, staying busy.

But nothing was working.

The Pause That Changed Everything

Out of frustration, I tried something different.

I paused.

Instead of forcing another solution, I made time to work with a professional coach, something I had never done before.

That decision changed everything.

In that space of pause, I found clarity:

  • I reframed how the course fit into my long-term goals

  • I identified better resources and strategies

  • I shifted from panic to perspective

The result?

Not only did I pass the course—I earned an A.

More importantly, that experience opened my eyes to the transformative power of coaching. It ultimately led me to pursue coaching myself, so I could help others experience similar breakthroughs.

Why Pause Unlocks Clarity

When you’re constantly in motion, you don’t give yourself time to think—you only react.

Pausing interrupts that cycle.

It allows you to:

  • Step back from the problem

  • See new perspectives

  • Make intentional decisions

I’ve seen this not only in my own life, but in the lives of my coaching clients.

When they pause, they begin to redefine:

  • What success means to them

  • How they measure progress

  • What truly matters moving forward

Because life isn’t a puzzle to solve.

It’s something to experience.

And clarity comes not from doing more—but from creating space.

Six Powerful Self-Inquiry Questions

If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few questions I often use—with myself and with clients:

  1. What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?

  2. What story am I telling myself about this situation? Is it based on facts or emotions?

  3. What is this challenge trying to teach me?

  4. What is the most important thing I can focus on right now?

  5. What is the smallest step I can take to move forward?

  6. What brings me the most energy and joy?

These questions aren’t about having immediate answers.

They’re about creating awareness.

And awareness is the first step toward meaningful change.

Your Next Chapter Starts Here

Your story isn’t over.

There’s another chapter waiting to be written.

But clarity about that next chapter doesn’t come from constant motion.

It comes from pause. Reflection. Intention.

So, give yourself permission to stop—even briefly.

Ask better questions. Listen more closely.

And trust that in the stillness, you’ll find exactly what you need to move forward.

Because sometimes, the most powerful step you can take…
is the one where you pause.

As always, Your Story Matters.
