If pausing is so powerful… why is it so hard?
For many high performers, the resistance to stillness isn’t about discipline—it’s about fear.
What’s Really Driving Your Busyness?
Busyness often looks like ambition on the surface. But underneath, there’s usually something deeper at play.
For some, it’s:
Fear of failure
Fear of being left behind
Fear of missing out (FOMO)
For others, it’s tied to perfectionism:
“If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t start at all.”
I’ve experienced all of these.
There were times I avoided writing altogether—not because I didn’t have something to say, but because I believed it had to be perfect the first time.
It never is.
What helped me move forward was embracing a simple but powerful mindset:
Progress, not perfection.
That shift allowed me to show up—as a writer, a coach, and a speaker—not perfectly, but authentically.
The Comparison Trap
Another hidden driver of busyness is comparison.
In today’s world, it’s easier than ever to measure your life against someone else’s highlight reel. This often leads to FOMO—the feeling that if you slow down, you’ll fall behind.
But here’s what pausing reveals:
You’re not behind.
You’re just on a different path.
When you create space to reflect, you begin to see your journey more clearly—without the distortion of comparison.
The Power of Vulnerability
Leaning into vulnerability has been a turning point for me.
Inspired by the work of Brené Brown, I’ve learned that acknowledging fear doesn’t weaken you—it strengthens you.
When you pause, you give yourself the opportunity to ask:
Is this fear based on facts?
Or is it a false story I’m telling myself?
That distinction matters.
Because not all fear deserves your attention.
Some fear informs growth.
Other fear distracts you from it.
Pause Creates Awareness—and Choice
Without pause, fear operates in the background—quietly driving your decisions.
With pause, you bring it into the light.
You begin to notice:
When you’re chasing validation instead of purpose
When you’re comparing instead of creating
When you’re reacting instead of choosing
And in that awareness, you gain something powerful:
Choice.
You can choose to:
Refocus on your own growth
Compete with yourself instead of others
Move forward from a place of intention—not fear
A New Definition of Progress
We often assume that more action equals more progress.
But that’s not always true.
Sometimes, constant motion keeps you stuck.
And sometimes… standing still is what moves you forward.
Because in stillness, you reconnect with what actually matters.
So, the next time you feel the urge to stay busy at all costs, pause and ask yourself:
What am I avoiding by not slowing down?
The answer might change everything.
And remember—your journey is uniquely yours.
You don’t need to rush it. You just need to honor it.
As always, Your Story Matters.
