I clearly remember my first watch as a kid, a Mickey Mouse watch, given to me by my Great Aunt Alma. The gift of time. I loved that watch and the animated movements of Mickey’s arms telling time made me smile. Thinking about that watch today, I’m reminded of the gift of her time, Aunt Alma, too. She gifted me with her time to tell me stories, sing songs, go for walks to watch the trains, and so much more. While I loved that watch, it is long gone for many years, but Aunt Alma’s gift of time is still here with me as fresh today in my memory as it was 40+ years ago.

This Christmas, as usual, my husband and I decided that instead of giving each other gifts, we would give each other the gift of time alone together creating new memories. This year’s gift of time was a quick couple days getaway to New York City for Christmas. On Christmas Day we took time for a simple but memorable activity of walking through a snow ❄️ covered Central Park. The gift of time together and new memories were better than any material gift.

I’m also reminded from church services when the pastor says during the offering to consider giving of your time, talent, and treasure. Giving your time to charity, community, spiritual organizations, your partners/spouses, family, friends, and to yourself is one of the most precious gifts.

As a leader at work, sometimes the gift of time is what your teammates need or value most, whether it is the gift of your time to actively listen to them and have more productive conversations or it is more time for your employees to rest and recover or have more flexibility in their work etc. For some employees a pay raise or promotion is most important and for others it may the gift of more personal time.

As we approach the New Year, I encourage you to reflect on when you previously gave or received the gift of time. What did it feel like for you? How might you receive or give the gift of time in the year ahead to others and to yourself?

No matter what you decide to do in 2025, reflect on how the gift of time may be the best gift you can give and receive. As always, Your Story Matters.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year ahead filled with many blessings.
